Cloud bills directors can actually read

Azure and Microsoft 365 sprawl is usually a permissions story, not a 'we need more cloud' story.

Abstract view of cloud infrastructure

A cloud invoice that nobody can explain is a governance signal, not an accounting problem. Somewhere between the original design and today, the link between what was bought and why was lost.

Rebuilding that link is usually a few days of work and it almost always reduces spend.

Licences first — it is the fastest money

Pull the full licence assignment list and reconcile it against your current staff list. Departed employees, duplicate assignments, and premium licences on users who need the base tier are common and immediately recoverable.

Then check the tier itself. Organisations frequently buy a higher tier for one feature that a cheaper add-on would have covered, or buy an add-on for something already included in the tier they hold.

Tag resources or stop pretending you can attribute cost

In Azure, untagged resources make cost attribution guesswork. A minimal tagging standard — owner, environment, cost centre — applied consistently is what turns the bill into a report.

Enforce it at creation. Retrospective tagging is an archaeology project that nobody finishes.

Find the things nobody turned off

Development environments running at production size. Storage accounts from a migration that completed two years ago. Snapshots with no retention policy. Test databases at a performance tier chosen during a load test.

None of these are dramatic individually. Collectively they are often a meaningful share of the monthly figure.

Report it the way the board thinks

Directors are not asking for a resource-group breakdown. They are asking whether spend is tracking to plan, what changed since last quarter, and what the commitment looks like for the next twelve months.

Add two lines they rarely get but always want: where the data physically resides, and when the last successful restore test was performed. Both are cheap to report and both come up the moment something goes wrong.

If this problem is live in your environment — shadow AI, a cloud bill nobody can explain, a website that cannot hand a lead to sales — book a consultation and we will tell you whether the first fix is a control, a workflow, or a conversation with the board.
